What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root Canal Process | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary

Root canal treatment is used to save teeth from extraction by removing the nerve inside the tooth (known as the pulp) when it is diseased or dying. Unfortunately, teeth are not able to heal on their own when there is disease or trauma caused to the nerve. Root canal therapy is a crucial dental treatment used to save teeth that are diseased, infected, fractured, or have become non-vital over time, reducing the need for extraction. If left untreated, an infected, decayed, or damaged tooth can cause severe pain and discomfort, an abscess, or potentially the loss of the tooth.

Signs of an Infected Tooth that May require a Root Canal

Root Canal Symptoms | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary

Signs of an infected tooth are not always identified right away. As the infection begins to progress, you may notice one [or more] of the following signs:

  • Pressure in the area of the infected tooth that causes a sharp pain when biting
  • The tooth becomes reactive to hot or cold food and beverages and the pain lingers long after the source is removed.
  • The tooth begins to slowly darken, indicating the nerve is damaged or dying.
  • Pain and tenderness in your gums become more frequent and severe
  • Tooth pain wakes you up in the middle of the night and affects the quality of your sleep.
  • Spontaneous, throbbing tooth pain is not relieved using over-the-counter pain medications.

Saving your natural teeth is always the first option we consider at Point McKay Dental Care. There are times, however, when root canal therapy is not the best solution for your needs and an extraction is the best course of action. When your tooth cannot be saved with root canal therapy, the need for a tooth extraction to relieve your pain becomes necessary. We will plan your treatment to replace the missing tooth with a dental implant, dental bridge, or partial denture to restore the function of your teeth and to prevent the neighboring teeth from shifting.

Preventing the Need for Root Canal

Prevent Root Canal | Point McKay Dental | General & Family Dentist | NW Calgary

Preventing root canal therapy can be as easy as following correct oral hygiene practices, choosing a healthy diet, and wearing a sport mouthguard to help prevent injury to the teeth. Regular dental visits help us to diagnose and identify underlying issues before they progress, which also reduces your risk of infection and ultimately root canal therapy.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to save a tooth when the pulp, or nerve tissue inside the tooth, is inflamed or infected. The dentist removes the damaged pulp, cleans and seals the canals, and then restores the tooth so it can keep functioning. In Alberta’s dental fee guide, root canal therapy is described as treatment for a tooth with damaged pulp or nerve tissue.

How can I Find the Best Root Canal Dentist in Calgary?

To find the best root canal dentist in Calgary, look for the provider who is the best fit for your case, not the one making the biggest claim. General dentists perform many root canals, while endodontists are the dental specialists who focus on the inside of the tooth and often handle more complex cases. A good place to start is the Alberta Dental Association’s Find a Dentist directory, and if your case may be complex, the Alberta Society of Dental Specialists directory lets you search specifically for an endodontist.

How Much Does a Root Canal Cost in NW Calgary?

In NW Calgary, the 2026 Alberta Dental Association abbreviated fee guide lists about $795.45 for a one-canal root canal, $1,158.35 for a two-canal tooth, and $1,354.65 for a three-canal tooth. Dentists set their own fees, so your actual quote can be lower or higher than the guide. Common extra costs can include an emergency exam at $81.05, periapical X-rays starting at $37.60, and, if the tooth needs protection afterward, a crown at $1,072.55 plus lab charges.

What Happens if a Rotten Tooth isn't Pulled?

If a rotten tooth is not pulled or otherwise treated, the decay usually keeps progressing. It can reach the nerve, cause significant pain, create a dental abscess, spread to nearby tissue or bone, and eventually leave the tooth too damaged to save. Dental abscesses do not go away on their own, so the real question is usually not just whether the tooth should be pulled, but whether it can still be saved with treatment such as a root canal.

Do I Need a Crown After a Root Canal?

Often yes, especially on premolars and molars. Back teeth take more chewing force and are more likely to crack after root canal treatment, so they are commonly protected with a crown. Front teeth do not always need a crown if enough healthy tooth structure remains and the tooth can be restored another way.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Root Canals?

Usually yes, at least in part, but the exact amount depends on your plan. Many dental plans cover endodontic treatment at different percentages, and your out-of-pocket cost depends on co-insurance, annual maximums, waiting periods, exclusions, and whether the final crown is covered separately. Alberta Blue Cross says basic dental coverage can include root canal therapy and X-rays, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan includes certain endodontic services subject to eligibility and plan rules.

Is There a Way to Prevent Needing a Root Canal?

You cannot prevent every root canal, but you can lower your odds. The most important steps are brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth daily, limiting sugar, drinking fluoridated water, seeing a dentist regularly, and treating cavities or cracks early before the pulp becomes infected. Untreated decay can progress to pain, infection, and tooth loss.

How can I overcome my fear of root canal treatment?

The best way to reduce fear of a root canal is to replace uncertainty with a plan. Root canal treatment is usually done with local anaesthetic, so you should be numb and should not feel pain during the procedure, and the American Association of Endodontists says modern root canal treatment is no more painful than getting a filling. Tell the office in advance that you are anxious, ask for a step-by-step explanation, and ask whether sedation options are appropriate for you.

How Quickly Can I Get a Root Canal Appointment?

If you have strong tooth pain, swelling, or signs of infection, call immediately and ask for an emergency assessment. Many Calgary and NW Calgary dental and endodontic practices advertise same-day emergency assessments or same-day treatment when schedules allow, and most root canals are completed in one or two appointments. Timing still depends on the diagnosis, the tooth involved, and whether you need a general dentist or an endodontist.
